Using the Find action in Microsoft 365 Excel

The Find action in Microsoft 365 Excel package enables you to search and retrieve various strings from a Microsoft 365 Excel spreadsheet. You can then store these strings as a list variable.

Settings

  • Enter the name of the session used to open the workbook with the Open action.

    See Using the Open action.

  • Use the From and Tilldrop-down menus in conjunction to select the following search conditions for the strings:
    • Beginning - To search the specified strings from the beginning of the specified spreadsheet.
    • End - To search the specified strings until the end of the specified spreadsheet.
    • Active cell - To search for strings in the active cell of the specified spreadsheet.
    • Specific cell - To search for strings in a specific cell by using the Cell address field to enter the details.
Note: By default, the From is set to Beginning and the Till is set to End.
  • In the Find field, enter the string that you want to search.
Optionally, click the Insert a value icon to select an existing variable that contains the strings that you want to search.
Note: Ensure that you enter the value correctly as the Find field must contain all the characters of the string that you are searching for.

For example, if the string that you want to search is SalesMay2024, ensure that you enter the exact same string in the Find field.

  • Use the Search options field to select one of the following options:
    • By rows - To search the string by rows in the spreadsheet.

This is the default search option.

    • By columns - To search the string by columns in the spreadsheet.

Select the Match case check box if you want to retrieve the strings that only matches the case of the characters that you have entered in the Find field.

Select the Match entire cell contents check box if you want to find only those cells that contain the entire string you have specified in the Find field.

  • Click the Assign cell addresses to variable drop-down menu to select an existing variable to store the output.

Click the Create variable icon if you do not have an existing string type variable to store the output.

  • Click Save.
